Who can benefit from family mediation?
Family Mediation is for anyone who has separated from a partner or spouse, whether or not they were married, or whether or not there are children.
Mediation will help clients like you to make your own choices. You might want to resolve the property and finances arising from a divorce or separation. You might want to discuss arrangements for your children or make other decisions relating to them.
For those separated couples with children, family mediation can often be the sensible starting point because it encourages you to look forward in a child-focussed way, recognising the importance for you to continue a parenting relationship: as parents of your children, and exploring how you can best do that for your family.
Understanding the needs and feelings of your children will be important. The mediator will explain about Child Inclusive Mediation and how this might be suitable in cases where there are older children.
Louise is trained to mediate all issues, which means the finances, the children or a combination of both. Some people feel that they do not need to bring everything to mediation, and they may specify for the discussions to be limited to, say, the finances only or the child arrangements only. The mediator will explore with you from the outset:
What would you like to resolve? What is important to you?
